FAQ about DIY Replacement Intercom Systems

1. Can I replace my old intercom system myself?

The short answer is YES, you can do this yourself! A few things you should consider before you take on this task however:

First, you should have enough electrical knowledge to take safety precautions and understand simple wiring diagrams to a certain degree. The best way to DIY upgrade home intercom is to label wires properly before letting them dangle and forgetting which wire goes where. Also, they are color coated for a reason! Use this to your advantage and keep track of those colors.

Second, You must be able to follow instructions! If you do not take safety precautions or step-by-step instructions seriously, injury may occur.

Third, be willing to pick up the phone and call for technical support. We can always direct you to the best person to speak with when installing a retrofit intercom system yourself.

Last, be willing to call a friend with electrical knowledge or a local installer / electrician if you run into a snag. Visits from a professional installer are not free so understand there will be an additional cost if this measure must be taken. The ultimate goal is that you will be able to do this project yourself!

2. Can I use the same wires that are connected to my old system?

Absolutely!! Using the existing wires saves you time and money! It would be a daunting task to replace all of the wires throughout your home, so we've taken that into consideration and offer only the best systems that will use the old wires. As mentioned above, just be sure to label wires properly so that replacing the system is a breeze! 

Please note that our systems cannot replace daisy chained intercoms.

3. I've noticed that the new systems are smaller than my old system! Will they fit okay? Will I have to add drywall and paint around them?

The beauty of our replacement systems is that they are accompanied by custom size frames that will cover the holes left by your old intercom system! With the advancements in technology over the years, devices have become much more compact while offering more features than older systems. The new master station, room / patio stations and even some door stations will mount into their matching frames to prove a seamless look in your home!

4. Is my old intercom system worth anything?

Many old intercom systems have met or even exceeded their life expectancy. We have, however, recently launched our "Old Intercom System Buyback Program" to help our customers both receive a credit toward the purchase of a new replacement system and avoid trashing a system that could potentially be restored or parted out for others to use. We are always looking for ways to recycle or upcycle used parts to avoid waste!

5. Which old intercom system models can be replaced?

If your system is a 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8 wire system and is NOT wired with daisy chain, we most likely have a system replacement for you - and you can install it yourself OR have a local installer come and estimate the project.
