[NT-IP][SIP][VOIP][Phone app][echoing][audio delay] - Issues with your Audio not fully communicating with the app.
Last Updated 5 years ago

There are a variety of reasons why your audio quality may be coming out poorly. In this section, we are addressing the number one reason affecting your phone app communication with your door station using the SIP/VOIP use:

Here is an example of an Internet Modem that allows you to control how your communication take place between the entry point of the LAN and the exit point to the Internet:

In the example below, the speed going both ways is set to 100 Mega Byte per seconds meaning  both parties can talk and view videos simultaneously.

Now, in the example below, the speed going both ways is set to 10 Mega Byte per seconds but only on a half duplex settings meaning only one party can talk at a time. In this scenario, the udio will be choppy, there will be a slight pause between each party voice data going or coming through the network, there will be also an echo in some instances but not always.

For the non software installers, this falls under what the term Traffic Shaping is [This is an over simplification for sake of getting the point across].

This is an example of half duplex communication. This is coming from a different building with the same model of internet modem but different switch equipment controlling a VOIP/SIP phone system:

NOTE: Not all modems/switches/routers will display the duplexing details in the same way. Some, the info may not even be present, but rest assured, if your symptom is as described in this page, this is what is causing your problem.

The solution is to address your audio traffic shaping by means of:

  • hardware adjustments (where applicable)
  • software adjustments (where application - 50% of cases)
  • routing equipment adjustments (the other 50% of cases)
  • seek your Internet Service Pprovider (ISP) assistance (Here, don't waist your time with the customer service department, ask for the technical department or their provisioning department as they can clearly see the traffic going through the network as you use or test the system live).
  • for institutions or bigger companies, get your networking department involved (where applicable) as in your case, you may be dealing with a VLAN traffic shaping or Port Control Policy more specifically.
