[MT series 2-wire][MT-700 series][MT-800 series][MT-D5][MT-D5S] - Wiring Gauge recommended
Last Updated 4 years ago

We absolutely recommend that 18/2 or 16/2 gauge wires are used for proper operation of this system. This also validates your warranty on this installation.

We enter a grey area where pre-existing wires were already installed to which the gauge is similar to is a cat5 or cat6 wires.

The cat5/cat6 wiring gauge used at your clients premise should work. Although we do not recommend the use of cat cables; if the environment causes you to have to deploy the MT system using cat5/cat6, we may recommend depending on distance to double on the pairs for effectiveness, this still causes issues as to your warranty if a claim were to be issued but your system should work - specifically for units not exceeding 4 monitors. As more monitors are deployed, you may/will run into voltage drop issues.

You may need to adjust the voltage output at the power supply as to ensure all parts, specially those units farther in line gets at least 24vDC.

Here is a link you can use for the lock wire if this uses also the cat5/cat6 wires to anticipate voltage drop and adjust at the PSU the output needed to reach the lock if an electric (vDC) lock will be used.

Here is a brief overview on the MT series,

Your MT-803R door station and monitors as an intercom system is based on three principle:

  1. the system runs on 24vDC. This means that from end to end, this circuit should always be at the very least getting 24vDC~ to operate. Almost always, any issues arising from this system (if any) will be related to a voltage drop, therefore, the necessity to read the voltage at the MT-PS (the power supply) and at the effected device (the monitor) before adjusting the voltage output at the MT-PS consequently.
  2. The system is based on the correct wiring gauge used. We recommend 18/2 wires. Some installations will differ for various reasons but an 18 gauge wire will prevent voltage drop if you have long runs...
  3. Last but not least, this system is based on the correct DIP code assigned to each device for proper communications to take place.

I provided a wiring diagram for your convenience so you know what to expect in how the system was installed. Always refer to this diagram if you ever need to troubleshoot your system.
